Abstract: The invention relates to the hydrogenolysis of polyhydroxy alcohols in the presence of metal incorporated manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve catalyst (M-OMS) to produce their corresponding lower alcohols. Hydrogenolysis of glycerol is performed above 50 °C temperature and hydrogen pressure of at least 10 bar while maintaining good conversions and high selectivity towards desired products.

Title of Invention: Process For Production Of Propanediol

Field of Invention. The present invention is related to process production of propanediols by selective catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol. In the present process hydrogenolysis of glycerol is carried out in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst containing metals on octahedral molecular sieves. Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propanediols is performed at temperatures above 180 °C and hydrogen pressure of at least 200 psi while maintaining high selectivities and good conversions.

1. Received first prize for the “Best M. Tech. Thesis Award – 2001” from Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) for the year 2001 for M. E. Research project work. Topic of the M. E. thesis was “Kinetic Study of Toluene Methylation over Silica Modified HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst”. (12/2001).
